Talking About Sex Without the Awkwardness: A Couples' Starter Guide

Most couples find it easier to talk about almost anything — finances, in-laws, parenting — than to talk directly about sex. That silence isn't because sex doesn't matter to them; it's because most of us were never taught how to have the conversation. Here's a starter framework that takes the awkwardness out of it.

Pick a neutral time, not a charged one. Never start this conversation right after sex (too vulnerable) or right after a rejection (too raw). A calm moment — a walk, a car ride, a quiet evening — works far better than trying to process it in bed.

Lead with curiosity about your partner, not a list of complaints. Instead of "we never..." try "I'd love to understand what makes you feel most in the mood — can I ask you some questions?" Starting from genuine interest rather than critique changes the entire emotional tone of the conversation.

Use a simple structure: more of, less of, new. Ask each other three questions:

What's something you'd like more of?

What's something you'd like less of, or that doesn't work for you?

Is there anything new you're curious to explore together?

This framework keeps things concrete and forward-looking instead of turning into a review of past disappointments.

Normalize that needs change over time. What worked five years ago may not work now, for reasons that have nothing to do with attraction — stress, body changes, medication, parenthood, and simple familiarity all shift things. Treating this as normal maintenance, not a crisis, makes it far easier to revisit regularly.

Make it an ongoing conversation, not a one-time fix. The goal isn't to have one perfect talk and never discuss it again. Couples with the healthiest sexual connection tend to check in periodically, the same way they'd check in about anything else that matters to both of them.

If the conversation keeps stalling out, that's common, and it's usually not about a lack of love — it's a lack of practice and a fear of hurting each other's feelings. A neutral third party can make a huge difference in helping both partners feel safe enough to be honest.

I coach couples through exactly these conversations, in-person in Hallandale Beach, FL, and online worldwide, in a structured and judgment-free setting. Book a fit call if you'd like support opening this up together.
